6. Tequila plants could produce diabetes friendly Sweeteners
The 247th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society presented preliminary report that indicates new sweetener, created from the agave plant, may be beneficial for lowering blood glucose levels. Agavins, natural sugars from Agave plants, which are incidentally used for Tequila production, are non-digestible and may behave as a dietary fiber in the gastrointestinal tract. Being non-digestible, these sugars would not cause a spike in blood glucose while allowing the person who ingests them to still experience a sweet taste. According to Mercedes G. López, Ph.D "We have found that during study in mice, since agavins reduce glucose levels and increase glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), they also increase the amount of insulin."GLP-1 is a hormone that slows the stomach from emptying, thereby stimulating production of insulin." Slowing the emptying of the stomach causes the feeling of fullness, which may help reduce caloric intake.
