USPSTF guidelines on pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes screening

The U.S Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) had published its final guidelines on prediabetes and type 2 diabetes screening and lowering the recommended age in asymptomatic adults who are overweight or obese to 35 years.

According to the studies, many Americans are unaware of their diabetes status, including those who have a BMI of 25 kg/m2 or greater. Nearing to 20% of people is unaware that they have diabetes and close to 85% of people are unaware that they have prediabetes. Also the study observed that one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes or prediabetes is being overweight or obese. The major outcomes and measures of the study include mortality, cardiovascular morbidity, and diabetes-related morbidity, development of diabetes, quality of life, and harms.

On the basis of the data analysis, the USPSTF recommendations urge clinicians the following:

  1. Screen eligible candidates every 3 years and advice preventive measures to those with prediabetes.
  2. The recommended age to stop screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes remains 70 years.
  3. Start screening asymptomatic, nonpregnant adults who are overweight or obese at age 40 years.
