3. Can Your Voice Reveal Your Glucose Levels?

Dual Benefits

Recent research suggests that the sound of your voice might change based on your glucose levels. A study published in Scientific Reports on August 28, 2024, tested whether fluctuations in glucose could affect the pitch of the voice. The theory is that changes in glucose levels could alter the tension and vibration of the vocal cords, leading to changes in the voice's frequency.

In the study, 505 participants wore continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and recorded their voices up to six times a day for two weeks using a custom app. The recordings were analyzed alongside the glucose data from their CGMs. Researchers found that as glucose levels increased, so did the pitch of the participants' voices. For every 1 mg/dL increase in glucose, there was a 0.02 Hz rise in vocal pitch.

This effect was observed across all groups—whether the participants were without diabetes, prediabetes, or had Type 2 diabetes. However, since people's voices are unique, the researchers suggest that future models for predicting glucose levels based on voice changes may need to be personalized.

In short, your voice might be revealing more about your glucose levels than you think, but further research is needed to develop this idea into a reliable tool.
