New research suggests that inhaling commonly used disinfectant chemicals known as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) may be significantly more harmful than ingesting them. In a preclinical study, researchers observed that inhaled exposure caused up to 100-fold greater lung injury and lethality compared with oral ingestion at comparable exposure levels. The findings are particularly relevant because QACs are widely used in disinfectant sprays, household cleaners, and various consumer products. Investigators also noted that blood concentrations achieved in mice following inhalation were similar to levels previously detected in humans, indicating that airborne exposure may be an important route through which these chemicals enter the body.
QACs have been extensively used since the 1940s and are present in products such as disinfectant sprays, fabric softeners, mouthwashes, nasal preparations, and some herbicides. Earlier studies have shown detectable QAC levels in the majority of individuals tested, with higher concentrations associated with reduced mitochondrial energy production. The current findings raise concerns that repeated inhalation especially from aerosolized cleaning agents could contribute to respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. While further human studies are needed, the results highlight the importance of cautious use of spray disinfectants, adequate ventilation during cleaning, and consideration of safer alternatives to minimize potential respiratory health risks.
