BIONIC PANCREAS & THE STORY BEHIND

Bionic Pancreas

"Bionic pancreas" is the name given to the dual-chambered Artificial Pancreas that comprises two separate pumps for delivering both insulin and glucagon, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and a control algorithm built into an iPhone app. Bionic Pancreas was developed by Edward Damiano and Firas El-Khatib of Boston University/Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr.Damiano stepped into the diabetes community about 12 years ago when his wife, a pediatrician, diagnosed their son David at 11 months, of type 1 diabetes. With an academic background in mechanical and biomedical engineering, Damiano put his experience to use to come up with a technological method to combat the disease for his son. Over the years, he developed a ‘bionic pancreas,’ that could perform the critical blood sugar regulation activities automatically.

Dr Damiano wants the bionic pancreas to be ready in time when his son goes to university in 2017. Quoting Dr.Damiano
"It's really too much for anyone to bear.Young people who start college with type 1 diabetes have such a hard time managing this new world that they're engaging with and at the same time they're taking full responsibility of their diabetes."My goal is to build a device that will unburden him of that."
And it is not just Dr Damiano..
