2. Large Korean Study Reassures: Maternal Diabetes Not Associated with Overall Childhood Cancer Risk

Substituting Red Meat with Healthier Options Significantly Lowers Type 2 Diabetes Risk, Major Study Finds

A nationwide Korean cohort study published in Scientific Reports provides reassuring evidence that maternal diabetes during pregnancy is not associated with an increased overall risk of childhood cancer. The study followed 549,851 singleton children born between 2003 and 2004 for up to 18 years using the Korean National Health Insurance database. After adjusting for maternal age, hypertension, preterm birth, neonatal complications, and other clinical factors, researchers found no statistically significant association between maternal diabetes and overall childhood cancer risk or cancer diagnosed at different ages. These findings suggest that while optimal glucose control during pregnancy remains essential, maternal diabetes itself does not appear to substantially increase the overall cancer risk in offspring.

When individual cancer types were analyzed, children born to mothers with diabetes showed an 81% higher relative risk of urinary tract cancer; however, the absolute risk remained extremely low, amounting to only 37 additional cases per 100,000 children. The authors emphasize that this isolated finding should be interpreted cautiously and viewed as an epidemiological signal requiring confirmation in future studies rather than evidence of a major clinical concern. Overall, the study offers important reassurance to women with diabetes while reinforcing the continued importance of maintaining good glycaemic control during pregnancy to prevent other well-established maternal and neonatal complications.
