Celebrating Onam, Embracing a New Era of Diabetes Care
As Kerala celebrates the vibrant spirit of Onam, with its message of health, happiness, prosperity, and togetherness, we are delighted to bring you this special Onam Edition of GEMS. Much like the festival celebrates new beginnings and abundance, diabetes care too is entering an exciting era shaped by innovation, technology, and increasingly personalized approaches to treatment.
In this issue, we bring you several important developments in diabetes and metabolic health. Our research highlights include emerging evidence on GLP-1 receptor agonists and fracture risk in people with type 2 diabetes, the relationship between maternal diabetes and childhood cancer risk, the intriguing possibility of Epstein–Barr virus influencing type 1 diabetes, and new insights into vitamin D, mood, and cognitive health in adults over 85 with diabetes. We also explore an exciting preclinical approach targeting TGF-β1 in M2 macrophages to preserve muscle health in obesity.
Our Drug Update brings the latest developments in diabetes therapeutics, including Takeda’s promising vaccine research, highlighting the growing possibilities of innovative approaches beyond conventional diabetes treatment. Following this, our GEMS Device Update features the MiniMed™ Flex, a compact, screen-free insulin pump that combines automated insulin delivery with smartphone-based control and CGM integration, reflecting the rapid evolution of connected diabetes technology.
Our GEMS Recipe of the Month, Chickpea Patties with Mango Chutney offers a flavorful, protein- and fiber-rich option for a balanced meal. Together, these features highlight how modern diabetes care is moving beyond glucose control towards protecting bone, brain, muscle, and overall quality of life.
As we celebrate Onam, let us also celebrate the remarkable progress being made in diabetes science and technology and look forward to a future where innovation makes care simpler, smarter, and more human.
Wishing all our readers a happy, healthy, and prosperous Onam!
