Issue 13, Nov 2009
Dear Friends,

November 14th is celebrated as World Diabetes Day being the birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting who along with others discovered insulin. Over the years those working with diabetes treatment and prevention have discovered a truth. Whatever said and done, diabetes education given periodically and continuously is the only means of ensuring success in diabetes treatment and prevention. From this year onwards for the next 5 years the World Diabetes Day theme will be ‘ Diabetes Education and Prevention’

We are extremely glad to present the anniversary issue of GEMS, which incidentally coincides with World Diabetes Day. We have been receiving tremendously encouraging responses from our valued readers from the first issue onwards. We are very grateful for the immense responses, and based on the feedback, from this issue onwards we are starting a brief video presentation on diabetes education as “anniversary special “.

The encouraging result from the diabetes prevention program is that prevention of diabetes is not a dream but a reality, which sustained over a decade with the practice of intensive life style modification.

We have also included an article on the importance of starting insulin right at the onset of diabetes itself and the dismal fact that for extremely obese people, bariatric surgery may actually increase the risk of fatality. There are two articles on weight loss- one describing how victoza scores high compared to exenatide and the second one showing actual research numbers confirming the reduction in sleep apnea with weight loss, though this has been suggested for a long time.
